3 lessons we can learn about parenting from athletes

Are you ready to take your momming game to the next level? Just like athletes strive for greatness, mothers (like you!) can also learn valuable lessons from their dedication and perseverance. In my house, we watch the Olympics. And I can’t help but feel excited already about what’s to come this summer.

When I was in middle school, I remember watching Michael Phelps all summer long win gold medal after gold medal. I’d fall asleep at night dreaming of being an all-star athlete just like him. Of course, I didn’t actually enjoy playing any kind of sport…

That’s the thing, though. You just can’t help but be inspired by stories like Phelps, right?

I mean he’s the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time!

For 16 years, it was clear he had dedicated his whole life to his sport.

It’s a bit like motherhood, wouldn’t you say?

So, I’d like to explore three essential momming goals inspired by the world of sports. Let's dive right in!

Parenting is like trying to assemble a puzzle while riding a rollercoaster, am I right? We're all just trying to nail this mom gig, raising our little humans to be happy, successful folks in a world that moves faster than the speed of light. It's like, whoa, how do we keep up with all the advice and expectations bombarding us from every direction?

But hey, guess what? Athletes might just hold the secret sauce to this whole parenting thing. Yeah, you heard me right! Those sports legends aren't just masters of their game; they're also experts in discipline, grit, and focus. And surprise, surprise, those same qualities are kinda crucial for us moms too.

First things first, though, let me hit you with some truth bombs: You're doing an awesome job, mama! Seriously, pat yourself on the back 'cause you're out here giving it your all, day in and day out. Go you!

Lesson 1: The Importance of Discipline and Consistency

So you know how athletes train like crazy, sticking to their routines no matter what? Well, that's what we need to do too. Setting clear rules and consequences for our kiddos and sticking to them helps them learn responsibility and accountability from a young age. Plus, it sets them up for success later in life. And hey, if discipline and consistency are your jam for 2024, let's tackle 'em together!

Lesson 2: Resilience and Overcoming Setbacks

Here's the thing about resilience: it's all about getting back up when life knocks you down. Athletes get this; they see failure as just another step on the path to greatness. We can encourage the same mindset in our kids (and ourselves) by celebrating their efforts and perseverance, not just their wins. It's all about that can-do attitude, baby! This is something we talk a lot about in my membership, The Mother’s Empowerment Sisterhood.

Lesson 3: Teamwork

Ever noticed how behind every athlete's success story, there's a squad of supporters cheering them on? Yeah, that's the power of teamwork, my friend. Whether it's family pitching in to help or friends lending an ear, having a support system is key. Imagine having that kind of backup in your mom life!

If you’d like to learn my own strategy for implementing these lessons, check out the MES membership here.

And hey, just know that I'm as hyped about your mom victories as I was watching Phelps crush it in the pool. Seriously, if there was a Mom Olympics, you'd be taking home gold every darn time!

Love,
