Trust me, you are more than “just a mom.”

What is Mastery?

When we think of mastery, we often think of it as something that can only be achieved by a select few… usually men or people who don’t have kids! However, mastery is not about innate talent or genius or gender; it's about commitment, hard work, and above all else, a willingness to learn.

Blossoming into mastery is is a journey that takes time and patience, but the rewards are more than worth the effort. Those who achieve mastery in their field often find themselves in a state of flow - a state of complete immersion and focus in which they are able to produce their best work. But what about those of us who choose to be moms and don’t have a profession outside of momming?

We deserve to feel a sense of mastery too, don’t you think?!

So what does it take to become a master? Good question! Let's explore the steps you need to take to blossom into your own mastery. We'll also look at some of the common misconceptions about mastery, and how you can overcome them.

Step 1: Understanding Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Before you can set out on the path to mastery, it is essential that you first take the time to understand your strengths and weaknesses. This will allow you to set realistic goals and identify which areas you need to focus on in order to improve.

There are a few different ways that you can go about understanding your strengths and weaknesses (all of which we go into in The Mother’s Empowerment Sisterhood.) One option is to take a personality test, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This will give you some insight into your personality type and how you tend to operate in different situations.

Another option is to ask those close to you for their honest feedback. This can be difficult to hear at times, but it can be incredibly helpful in getting an outside perspective on your strengths and weaknesses. You can also reflect on your past experiences, both good and bad, to gain insights into what you’re naturally good at and where you tend to struggle.

Once you have a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, you can start setting goals that are aligned with your desired outcome. Remember, the goal is not to become perfect, but rather to continuously strive for improvement. No flower is exactly like another flower, but she blossoms in the way SHE is meant to. By using your newly gained insights, you can begin charting a course towards mastery.

Step 2: Vivid Dreaming

No matter what your end goal is (I call this a "Vivid Dream"), there are smaller goals and milestones you can set along the way to help you stay on track and motivated. Here are a few tips for setting effective goals and milestones, which eventually lead you to a Vivid Dream:

1. DREAM BIG. In the Mother’s Empowerment Sisterhood, we spend a whole month dreaming and scheming. We create Vivid Dream Boards and fully embody out future selves.

2. Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

3. Write down your goals and refer to them often.

4. Create a timeline for each goal and milestone with specific deadlines.

5. Share your goals with others who can support and encourage you.

6. Celebrate each accomplishment along the way!

We hold space for each of these in the MES.

Step 3: Take Action & Measure Results

In order to achieve mastery (to fully BLOSSOM), it is important to take action and measure results. This step-by-step guide will show you how to do just that.

1. Set realistic goals for yourself and break them down into smaller steps.

2. Take action towards your goals by implementing specific plans and strategies.

3. Measure your progress along the way and make adjustments as needed.

4. Persevere through challenges and setbacks, learning from each experience.

5. Celebrate your successes and continue striving for excellence.

Step 4: Water your Vivid Dream by Developing Self-Discipline & Consistency

If you want to be successful in anything, you need to develop self-discipline and consistency. This is true for mastering any skill, including the violin.

Self-discipline is the key to practicing regularly and making progress. It’s important to set aside time each day to practice, and to stick to your practice schedule even when you don’t feel like it. Remember, the only way to get better at anything is to practice consistently.

Your Dream won’t grow if you don’t water it.

Consistency is also important when it comes to learning new techniques or pieces of music. It can be tempting to start something new every time you sit down to practice, but this will only slow your progress. Instead, focus on perfecting one thing at a time. Once you’ve mastered it, move on to something else.

Both self-discipline and consistency take time and effort to develop. But if you’re patient and keep at it, eventually they will become second nature and you’ll be well on your way to mastering the violin!

Step 5: Cultivate Village, Resources & Mentors

The biggest barrier to success is often ourselves. We doubt our ability to achieve greatness, so we never even try. But if you want to be a master at something, you have to have faith in your own abilities. Having people around you that love and support you is key!

One way to increase your confidence is to surround yourself with people who believe in you and who are willing to help you along the way. These can be friends, family, colleagues, or even strangers who are passionate about the same thing as you are. In the MES we call these people our village.

Another way to build your confidence is by gathering resources that will help you on your journey. There are many books, websites, and articles out there that can provide guidance and inspiration. You can also find mentors who can offer advice and support.

Step 6: Practice, Practice, Practice!

If you want to get good at anything, you have to practice. A lot. This is true for becoming a master at anything in life. You have to put in the time and effort to get better and better. The great thing about practice is that it can be fun. You can set goals for yourself and track your progress as you go. The more you practice, the better you will become. Remember, there are no shortcuts to mastery. It takes hard work and dedication. But the rewards are worth it!
